Stay In The Know:

Pretty Much Screwed by Jenna McCarthy

This book was pretty good. It was funny, it was a little heartbreaking, and it took the characters to places I didn't see coming.

I do wish some things had been a little different.

At the beginning of the book, it seems as though the story is going to be about Lizzy instead of Charlotte. I kept waiting for Lizzy's voice to pop up and it never did.

I also really thought that Charlotte was going to divorce her husband. I kind of wish she did. I think it's something we don't see in books a lot and would be an interesting twist to the book.

This is a good option to take with you to the beach this summer. You can check it out at Barnes & Noble for $9.87.

Favorite Quotes:

  • "'She's a filthy whore and a hideous hag as far as I'm concerned. And you're just an asshole.'"

  • "By all accounts, he seemed to genuinely like her. Charlotte wondered just how and when she would fuck this up."

  • "She'd gone through hell and come out the other side stronger, smarter, even healthier, so in a weird way he had done her a favor. She was a survivor and she was proud of herself."

  • "'Eric, do you promise to continue to love Kate in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, for better or worse, even if she takes the whole 'for poorer' thing literally and buys another limited edition designer purse or redecorates the living room again?'"

  • "Okay? No, I'm not okay. I'm fucking pregnant."

  • "She's always thought this was her father's rather vulgar way of saying 'hurry up,' but now she realized it meant something more nuanced: You had said or implied that you were going to do something, and the world was waiting. Certainly nobody was getting any younger. Make good on your word, damn it."

  • "'Vegetarianism is not permissible under any circumstances. The kid can cut school, smoke dope, tattoo the entire Hells Angels secret membership oath onto his back and pierce any lobe or orifice he sees fit; as long as he eats prime rib when we put it in front of him, we will love and support him.'"

  • "To Charlotte, a house was more than a protective structure; it was a home. It held their memories and their history and, as such, was almost like a living thing. They'd made a mark on it, just as it had made a mark on them. To walk away from it without so much as a reverent pause and a few pictures for posterity seemed heartless and disrespectful."
